he certainly doesn't need any attention from my lil ol blog, but kanye west has done for me what few have been able to do in a long time, and that is to get me really stoked for a new album -- not just new music but an actual, tangible album. as someone who routinely doesn't pay for big label music, i'm really happy to go cop this record, even though he built anticipation for its release by deliberately leaking most of it on the internet (one at a time, mind you). i won't go into how this album is really well curated with precise guest spots or the importance of his production collaboration with some of his long-time influences; nor will i bore you with how this kanye, this new, actualized kanye west is the near perfect sum of all of his work and public bullshit. i will say that i am really excited about kanye west.

this song is on some OTHER new shit, where he gets curtis mayfield via pete rock's production to make jay-z sound awesome again. it's called "the joy", of course.

i've never been a huge 2Pac fan, save for the hits and obvious songs, but i'm definitely partial to this one.

the funny thing is it's actually scarface's song, pac was just a guest spot; the focus obviously changed when 2pac was killed right before its release. truth be told, scarface outshines pac on this track, even though it wound up being about the slain rapper. the video was actually filmed after the murder and features a 2Pac look-a-like which spurred more rumors that he was still alive.

i used to watch the x-files when i was a kid. it was easily one of my favorite shows, so much so that i talked my mom into taking me to its fan convention. i bet you didn't even know there was an x-files convention.

the event was held in an empty blimp hangar on a now vacant military base. even the parking guys were black suited up and had cool ear pieces. it was all kinds of serious.

mulder and scully were no shows, but the convention did boast appearances by two-thirds of the lone gunmen, as well as assistant director skinner. there were also various booths where fans could purchase assorted show paraphernalia; but nothing beat the green screen picture setup.

although probably borderline expensive, i honestly don't remember, one could get their picture taken and digitally inserted into agent mulder's basement office. all you had to do was get in front of the green screen and sit down at the green desk and pose.

i'm bad at this. don't get me wrong, i'm very happy with the picture above, just disappointed with the lack of fun in my pose. even some arms slyly folded behind my head would have worked. something more than a blank stare and legs cautiously propped up on an imaginary desk. something that conveyed the true excitement of sitting in fox mulder's seat.

this wasn't even the first time i misread a photo opportunity. when i was much younger, my dad took me to universal studios. at the time, you could get your picture taken with this giant king kong. you actually got to stand in kong's clenched fist, like you were trapped in some death grip. the guy who went before me made an appropriate pose, arms flailing in the air and a mock grimace. when it was my turn i chose to go for something far more subtle, raising my hand and trying to point back at king kong with my thumb, as if to say "get a load of this guy!".

the photographer asked if that's what i really wanted to do. i was like, yeah chief, of course. it was so obviously brilliant. why wouldn't i do this? the photo was snapped and the result was this awkward souvenir similar to my x-files photo.

as goofy as all this may be -- x-files nerds packed into a blimp hangar -- this was still serious shit to us, and i think that's ultimately what i was going for in my picture. i wasn't about to ham it up because i didn't even have the presence of mind to do so. all in all, i'd probably do the same exact thing if i had the chance.

i guess i might try smiling, too.
